Homeland Security Minister Amir Ohana today (Sunday) referred to the case of Aryeh Schiff, a resident of Arad who is suspected of shooting to death a man who broke into his home, and said that in cases where civilians acted to protect themselves, as happened in this case, the state should give them back.

In a post on his Facebook page, the minister described Schiff as an exemplary citizen - adding that the things he wrote were based on media publications, and that he wrote them knowing that there was evidence to which he had not been exposed.

"Arieh reached the age of 70 as a law-abiding citizen. More than that - he volunteers in rescue units and even volunteers for the Israel Police. Arieh carries a gun with a license.

"What do law enforcement expect of such an exemplary citizen to do, to allow a thief to steal his property? To shout? To block the vehicle with his body? And it is not clear that any confrontation with the thief could endanger his life, who like the police knows that."

Ohana noted a case that occurred in 2007, when policeman Shlomi Assulin died after being stabbed in the neck while confronting a car thief who was arrested "on hot": "For four years the late Shlomi lay between life and death, until he gave his soul to the Creator.

If he had shot and killed the offender, he might have been alive today.

And no - he should not have been prosecuted. "

"Therefore, as Minister of Justice, I was happy to grant a pardon to another police officer, who in similar circumstances shot and killed the car thief (not before he paid a heavy price for it and stood trial and ran a prison sentence)," the minister added.

"In the fight against crime, there are good and bad ones. There are law-abiding citizens who work to protect themselves and their property - and there are violent and dangerous criminals who make a living on the backs of law-abiding people."

"The duty of the state is to provide its citizens with protection and security from terrorism and crime. It is clear that it will not be able to do so in 100% of cases, it is impossible to place a police officer on every street corner 24/7. But, and this is very important - it means that in those cases "To protect themselves, the state should give them back," he wrote.

"As you know, the Minister of Internal Security does not conduct investigations - he cannot order who to arrest and who to release. But I can - as I always did as a Member of Knesset and even before - express my opinion, and that is what I do here," Ohana concluded.

"There are times in life when the choice is really simple: when the bad are against the good, I am with the good."
