The Yuen Long Monitoring Parliamentary Union launched an online poll earlier this month. The results showed that 98.1% of the voters who voted said that the district councillors are public officials, and 99.5% of the public believed that before running for election and accepting the appointment of district councilors, they must swear to support the Basic Law and allegiance Special Administrative Region Government.

In addition, more than 99.4% of the people who voted believed that the "District Councils Ordinance" and "Oaths and Declarations Ordinance" should be amended to disqualify district members who violated oaths.

The DAB Legislative Council Member Leung Chi-hsiung believes that the polls reflect that the public is dissatisfied with the incumbent district councilors, and that it is a natural move for public officials to swear allegiance to the SAR.

The IPU urges the government to immediately amend the "District Councils Ordinance" and "Oaths and Declarations Ordinance" to introduce local legislation on the object, content, form, rules, implementation, management and penalties of the oath, and to retrospect the effective date to the current District Council , To remove the qualifications of district councilors who refused to support the Basic Law and loyal to the SAR government
