Our 10 favorite hotels in the heart of Lisbon under 150 € a night

2020-12-10T17:30:50.530Z

The Portuguese capital has become in a few years an essential tourist destination. To satisfy its new visitors, the hotel industry has adapted quickly and well, encouraging them to come back often. Here are ten Lisbon establishments with a strong personality.

Torel Palace, for the view

Totally atypical place perched on the Colina de Santana with a view of the city and the Tagus, accessible by the funicular (which stops at 8 p.m.) or for the brave by the 235 steps.

The 25 rooms, the villa and the five apartment suites, of this four-star hotel, are spread out in a tangle of terraces and gardens, in three mansions dating from the beginning of the last century.

With the added bonus of a swimming pool accessible 24 hours a day and beautiful lounges.

Isabel Sá Nogueira, the interior designer, accentuated the Lisbon bourgeois house side, with stylish furniture, paintings, velvets etc.

Each of the three buildings has a particular style.

The pink, the oldest, which suffers from some soundproofing problems (which should be resolved soon takes over the management), evokes the Portuguese queens, the blue the kings and the white the different monarchies.

upstairs, many bedrooms have a view of the Tagus River.

The breakfasts served in your room or by the pool combine savory and sweet dishes.

In a sort of pleasantly furnished cave below the hotel, the Cave 23 restaurant and bar will satisfy those who do not wish to dine outside.

Quality cuisine with a 9-course gourmet menu for € 55.

The room to book

: Dona Inés de Castro very bright, large with panoramic views of the city and the palace gardens.

Avoid the sad rooms at the back.

The price:

from 130 €.

Teatro Boutique, for the staging

Located in the pulsating heart of Lisbon, between the Chiado district and Bairro Alto, Teatro lives to the rhythm of the city.

Hotels B&B / Photo press

Member of the B&B Hotels collection established in large cities with a controlled price policy, Teatro, decorated by a scenographer, offers a profusion of key figures from the Comedia dell'arte.

A little baroque but fun way to differentiate the 21 rooms.

The headboards evoke stage curtains.

Textiles and life-size silhouettes give life to Arlequin, Colombine, Pantalon, Polichinelle etc.

Located in the pulsating heart of Lisbon, between the Chiado district and Bairro Alto, Teatro lives to the rhythm of the sometimes noisy streets.

LX Boutique hotel, for moths

The LX is aimed, above all, at those who like to walk around Lisbon during the day.

LX / Photo press

Overlooking the river, on the estuary, a privileged location, the LX, a very dapper 4-star hotel, succeeds the old century-old hotel which no longer met current criteria.

a stone's throw from the most lively districts of Lisbon Chiado, Baixa and Cais do Sodré, from Pink Street with its bars and restaurants, the LX is aimed, above all, at those who like to roam the city in the day, and going out in the evening.

The rooms are perfectly soundproofed and the mattresses so wide and comfortable that one sleeps there, despite the noisy environment, like a baby.

The decorator's stance, the entirely glazed bathrooms and toilets with a slight blur embarrass some guests.

As a welcome in the room, cocktail and sushi, at the hotel's Confraria restaurant bar.

Outside of meals, customers are happy to sit there to read or work with a cup of coffee or tea and a few

pastels de nata

offered at will.

They also appreciate the homemade breakfast.

Good to know: the laundry service works very well as well as the shuttle to the airport.

The room to book

: one of those perched on the fourth floor with a view of the river.

Specify when booking that you are refusing a room facing the back of the hotel, without a view and noisy because of the discos.

The price:

from 76 €, 101 € for a room with a view of the river.

Britania Art Deco Boutique Hotel, for the vintage touch

The Britania has been completely renovated.

Lisbon Heritage Collection / Photo press

In a quiet lane leading to Avenue de la Liberté, Le Britania, a four-star hotel built in 1940 by Cassiano Branco (

the most famous of modernist architects, Editor's note

), has been completely renovated.

Labeled Heritage collection, its 33 very vintage rooms combine sober furniture and bright colors.

Their cork flooring, one of the characteristics of the oldest Lisbon houses, contributes to sound and thermal insulation.

In the large marble bathrooms, bathrobes, slippers and courtesy products from the very chic English brand Molton Brown, establish the standing of the Britania.

The Imperio bar has a colonial atmosphere with a number of paintings illustrating the old Portuguese counters and possessions.

Served until noon, in your room or as a buffet, breakfast is a real meal.

Delicious port in a carafe offered in your room as well as a coffee time with sweets at the end of the day.

The Britania, honored with the distinction of best hotel service at the latest Condé Nast Johansens Annual awards, provides 24-hour room service.

And, guests appreciate having a garage but also a small, well-equipped business center with high-speed internet, printer and computer.

The price

As Janelas Verdes, for its romanticism

As Janelas Verdes is a real gem with 29 rooms nestled in the Lapa district.

Lisbon Heritage Collection / Photo press

We fell in love with this jewel of 29 rooms nestled in its garden on the banks of the Tagus, in the Lapa district, 15 minutes walk from the historic center, 3 minutes by bus, the stop is very close.

The only hazard: the place is so charming that we leave it with regret.

Having a drink after having served yourself at the Honesty bar, on the rooftop extending the library or in this beautiful room is a delight.

Savoring your breakfast in the garden, served until noon, with the whispering of the fountain, is pure pleasure, as is the

tea time

offered with pastries.

Why would we go out?

At least to visit the MNAA, National Museum of Ancient Art, nearby, free for hotel guests.

When the director assures us that the 18th century residence would have inspired Eça de Queiroz, novelist, considered the Portuguese Flaubert, we believe him.

The author indeed liked to stay there to write in peace.

Each room, each room evokes with its trinkets, its photos, its books, a family home.

Apart from the slightly dated bathrooms with their bidets, the rooms are spacious, comfortable and quiet.

The room to book

: either the 1 on the ground floor or the 32, facing south, on the third floor, with a view of the Tagus.

The price

 : from 107 €.

A member of the Heritage Collection, the hotel also has special prices for those over 50.

Martinhal Lisbon Chiado, family, I love you

The Martinhal in Lisbon, a hotel for families.

Martinhal / Press photo

Londoners, Chitra and Roman Stern, at the head of a tribe of two girls and two boys, left England seven years ago to develop their Martinhal collection in Portugal.

Their philosophy: to reconcile the stay of parents and children by increasing the services provided to their children, restaurants adapted for adults to have a quiet lunch, play areas, kids club, babysitting, activities, etc.

After their first resort in the Algarve, they opened, on the same principle, this hotel in the trendy district of Lisbon.

Easy to entrust the little ones to visit the city.

The Martinhal is presented as a five-star which is not pretentious.

It is an atypical place that is difficult to classify with 84 keys between studios and apartments.

Excellent service, good gastronomy, and ideal geolocation.

The room to reserve

: the term studio is more appropriate.

Opt for the second floor, Rua da Flores side, quiet with mini view of the Tagus.

Prices

 : from 130 €.

Hop!

You have to climb to reach this beautiful 1930s building, the former factory of a French perfumer on the Santa Catarina hill.

The view is the ultimate reward, especially from the Madame Petisca restaurant dominating the situation on the seventh and last floor.

It is on its rooftop or in its glass room that we appreciate the varied and generous breakfast.

21 rooms are spread out on a gentle slope, made up in distinct colors, apple green, cardinal red, silver gray ... An armchair, a chest of drawers, a stylish console, chosen with care, and superb textiles awaken the designer decor.

The bathrooms are hidden in a room where every detail has been thought of.

To reach the fashionable districts of Lisbon, Bairo Alto, Cais do Sodre, take the nearby tram or take the stairs, a physical exercise lasting only a few minutes.

The room to book:

on the fourth floor a superior double with a view of the Tagus.

Hotel White, for its location ... and its swimming pool

Exceptional brightness for this boutique hotel on Praça do Saldanha.

White Hotel / Photo press

White, white, white and white… One shade only dresses each room and gives it exceptional luminosity.

A relaxing, easy-going decor for this boutique hotel on Praça do Saldanha, at the foot of the metro station serving the international airport in 15 minutes and the city center in 5 minutes, a real plus.

The forty-five comfortably sized, well-appointed rooms and suites climb up to the 9th floor while the darker-walled breakfast room nestles in the lounge on the ground floor.

The swimming pool with a view is a must, except when the wind blows from the Atlantic caresses it bluntly.

Quiet, calm stop to stay in the center without suffering the inconveniences.

The room to book:

the standard suite on the 9th floor.

The price

 : standard room from 55 €, standard suite 113 € or 129 € with breakfasts.

Memmo Alfama Hotel Lisboa: to capture the soul of the city

Labeled Design Hotel, the Memmo Alfama is not far from the cathedral and Saint George's Castle.

Design Hotel / Photo press

Blood red infinity pool on the rooftop, very contemporary facade, terraces on all floors, the Memmo Alfama, labeled Design Hotel, stands out not far from the cathedral and the Sao Jorge castle.

It shakes up, without shocking, this historic district surrounded by the Tagus.

Below, the cruise ships dock on the quays, dumping their passengers in a continuous stream.

The atmosphere of Alfama is almost that of a port, with its wide open bars from which the tears of fado escape.

You don't have to go far from your hotel to capture the Lisbon soul, or for a drink.

The Terrace, restaurant bar, on the rooftop is one of the most popular in the city for its panorama but also its incredible cocktail and wine list and that of tapas.

Most of the 42 rooms, sober, calm, are extended by a terrace revealing the Tagus and beyond the ocean.

The hotel takes care of reserving, if necessary a parking space in a nearby garage (15 € per day)

The room to book

: on the 2nd floor, facing east, for the rising sun, an upper Alfamo, with terrace, larger than its similar on the 1st or 3rd and last floor or an attic room with the possibility of accessing a mini-balcony with view.

Avoid patio rooms.

The price

 : from 130 € with breakfast.

Altis Belem & Spa: for a beautiful getaway

Close to the Altis Belem Hotel & Spa: the MAAT museum, the Belem garden and the Jeronimos monastery.

Altis / Press photo

Not content with overlooking the Tagus, the Tower of Belem and the Monument of Discovery, this five-star hotel invites guests in its 50 rooms to escape thanks to the decorative panels evoking different countries on the five continents.

Treated with lightness, these works in no way weigh down the Zen and design decor.

The eight Superior Rooms, the simplest category, are perfect with balconies overlooking the Tagus River and the gardens.

The beds are divine, dressed in Egyptian cotton linen and down comforters.

With, prominently displayed, a menu of pillows to ensure the best sleep.

In the marble and glass bathrooms, the same refinement of bathrobes, slippers and courtesy products, carefully renewed.

Outdoor or indoor swimming pool,

that is the question?

The second is sheltered in the spa with terrace.

Feitoria, a starred restaurant or Cafetaria Mensagem fusion food, more informal?

Another question.

Anyway, a cocktail and some finger food, at 38 ° 41, the bar with its terrace along the river is a must… Lisbon people love to sit there when the sun sets on the Tagus.

The room to book:

202, superior room on the second floor, quiet with view and balcony.

The price

 : from 140 €, superior room with a view.

Altis Belém Hotel & Spa, Doca do Bom Sucesso, 1400-038 Lisboa, Portugal.
