At 07:10 this morning (02:40 GMT Thursday), unidentified armed men shot dead journalist and activist Malalai Maiwand as well as her driver (in) Jalalabad,

" Attaullah Khogyani, spokesperson for the governor of the country, told AFP. Nangarhar province, of which Jalalabad is the capital.

Ms. Maiwand was on his way to the offices of the private television station Enekaas TV, for which she worked, when the attack took place, he said.

This information was confirmed by Engineer Zalmai, the director of Enekaas.

Targeted attacks targeting personalities - journalists, politicians and clerics, human rights defenders - have increased in recent months, despite ongoing peace talks in Doha between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

This is the third murder of an Afghan journalist since early November.

Aliyas Dayee, 33, who worked for Radio Liberty, a US-funded media outlet, died on November 12 when a bomb exploded under his car in Lashkar Gah (south).

He had been threatened by the Taliban, who criticized him for covering up their operations, Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported.

On November 7, Yama Siawash, a former TV presenter, was also killed in Kabul in the same circumstances.

Targeted attacks in the country are rarely claimed, and Ms. Maiwand's murder has so far not been claimed.

Located a hundred kilometers from the border with Pakistan, the city of Jalalabad is often the scene of bloody attacks.

Nangarhar province is home to many jihadist groups, including the Taliban and the Islamic State group.

Violence continues to ravage Afghanistan, despite the peace talks which began on September 12 in Doha and are progressing slowly.

The two camps announced in early December an agreement setting the framework for the discussions.
