The renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary, practically completed with the PP, according to the Government, is complicated at times.

If the popular say now that they will not renew if there are pardons for the

procés

prisoners

, something that the Executive defined as a new "excuse", United We can press this Wednesday to have a presence in that new governing body of the Judicial Power.

The PP demands that the group of Pablo Iglesias stay out and this indicates that it has an agreement with the PSOE that it will enter.

The solution is pointed out after the Catalan elections in February.

United We Can is moving to prevent the PSOE and the PP from reaching an agreement in the Judiciary, leaving the group of Iglesias out of the game.

"There is no government agreement with the PP, if there is an agreement between the PSOE and the PP I do not know it," said the spokesman for United We Can in Congress, Pablo Echenique.

Echenique assured that they have all the "guarantees" from the PSOE that they will not be left out of the agreement.

Podemos maintains that there is an agreement between the president, Pedro Sánchez, and Iglesias, so that whatever the formula chosen to renew the body of the judges, United Podemos will be taken into account as part of the Executive.

The socialist sector of the Government does not want to clarify to what extent this agreement is real, but insists that the negotiation is practically closed and only awaits the moment when the PP agrees to announce the pact, probably after the Catalan elections.

Iglesias preferred to choose to recover the law to reform the election system of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), but in the government agreement reached with the PSOE it was established that on matters of State, Sánchez would be the one to mark the line.

The socialist part of the Government seems to have already decided its commitment to the agreement with the PP against carrying out a legal reform, which the Executive does not like and has raised suspicions in Brussels.

United We would prefer that the PP were the one to get up from the table, refuse to agree to the renewal and force the Government to carry out the reform, but that option seems to be moving away every day.

In the Churches party they are aware, so even with the PP as a possible partner, they want to be part of the agreement.

The Government is very clear that the last argument of the PP to delay the agreement on the renewal of the CGPJ, that of the possible pardons to the prisoners of the

procés

, is just “one more excuse” because the popular ones wait for the opportune moment to close a pact that the Executive terminates.

“The deal is practically done, if not done.

It is a problem of the attitude of the PP.

No party has the right of veto in the renewal of the Judiciary.

Hopefully the PP will stop making excuses and value the agreement we have, "said the Minister Spokesperson, María Jesús Montero.

The blocking point continues in the right of veto that the PP demands on all the names to guarantee that none is close to United We Can.

But the Executive understands that there is no underlying problem and it is only about delaying maneuvers by the PP to delay the agreement until after the Catalan elections, when it will have a clear horizon of two years without elections and without direct electoral competition with Vox.

The Executive insists that the agreement is practically made with the distribution of 10 members each and a progressive president who would give the majority to this sector in the event of a tie.

Only Pablo Casado's authorization would remain, but the PP insists that it will not do so without guarantees that none of the members will be close to United We Can.

What is increasingly clear is that the deadlines are lengthening.

The PSOE spokesperson in Congress, Adriana Lastra, clarified that the law promoted with United We Can to regulate the powers of the CGPJ in office will take its first consideration in plenary session on the 15th, but then it will begin its process in Parliament.

Lastra indicated that for an organic law of this scope on a power of the State it will take at least until March, including enabling January to work on papers and the commission in Congress.

And he reasoned that this period will be good for the PP to agree to definitively close the pact with the PSOE.

And especially considering that by then the Catalan elections on February 14 will have already passed, reports

Javier Casqueiro.
