The Canaries are one of the few areas in Europe for which no corona travel warning applies.

But that could change soon - curfews now also apply.

After the travel warning for the Canary Islands was lifted on October 24, many Germans flocked to sunnier climes.

Long queues formed at the airport in Düsseldorf to flee the corona virus to sunnier climes *.

Now the status as a safe travel area is on the brink: the islands have been recording

increased numbers of corona infections

for a few days

.

Now the threshold has even been exceeded.

Canary Islands vacation in danger?

Critical corona value exceeded - travel warning threatens

According to Tenerife News, the Canary Islands recently reported 202 new corona cases in one day.

This increases the cumulative incidence - i.e. the number of corona cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days - to a

value of 52.2

.

In Germany, 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants are the limit above which travel warnings are issued.

However, this is not expected to happen immediately - the situation is typically observed for a few days.

A

travel warning

is only

unavoidable

if no improvement in the incidence is foreseeable

.

The main source of the increased incidence in the Canary Islands is the number of new infections in

Tenerife

.

Here the incidence is currently 96.1, as reported by Tenerife News.

In order to reduce the number of cases, stricter corona rules have been in place on the Spanish island since December 5th.

These are expressed in the form of night curfews:

people are no longer allowed to leave the house between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

, and only a maximum of four people are allowed to meet privately.

Visiting restaurants and hotels together is also initially limited to four people.

Eight people are currently allowed on the other Canary Islands.

In order to curb the spread of the corona virus over the

holiday and Christmas season

,

nightly curfews between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. should apply between December 23 and January 6

- on all islands in the Canary Islands.

A maximum of six people will then be allowed at family gatherings.

Children up to six years of age are exempt from the rule.

Canaries facilitate entry for tourists - antigen tests are also allowed

Since November 14th, stricter entry rules have been in place for the Canaries.

However, the situation turned out to be more than confusing for tourists: After initially both PCR and antigen tests were allowed as evidence of a non-existent corona infection, it was said from November 23rd that only one PCR test was sufficient .

This rule immediately caused a

slump in bookings

- among other things at the hotel chain Rui, as the trade journal fvw reported.

"We hope that the Spanish government will allow the rapid tests again in order to be able to resume the winter season, which is still a few months ahead of us," said the spokeswoman for the Riu chain, Yvonne Swiezawski, in this regard.

This is because PCR tests tend to be more expensive and travelers have to wait longer to get the result.

The antigen tests are a

faster alternative

here

. The President of the Canary Islands Ángel Víctor Torres now also seems to have enforced this: According to the trip before 9 am, he has now signed the corresponding decree that the antigen test should be allowed again upon entry.

The regional government of the Canary Islands has thus asserted itself against the Spanish central government.

As early as Thursday (December 10th) a negative antigen test should be sufficient upon entry

.

Corona situation in the Canary Islands: Current rules for entry

Tenerife is currently

the most severely affected

by the corona virus

with

3,551 acute cases out of a total of 4,728 on all islands

, according to Tenerife News.

Another 1,047 active cases are recorded in Gran Canaria.

There are 70 on Lanzarote, 43 on Fuerteventura, ten on La Gomera and seven on La Palma.

A

negative PCR or antigen test must be presented

when entering the Canary Islands

.

According to the Foreign Office, the test must not have been carried out more than 72 hours ago.

If possible, it should have been done in the country of origin, but there are also test options in authorized test stations directly after entry.

The costs are borne by the examined person.

In addition, while staying in a tourist accommodation facility in the Canary Islands, you are obliged to activate the Spanish Corona app "Radar COVID" and to turn it off at the earliest 15 days after your return home.
