Morocco's main Islamist groups yesterday (Saturday) rejected Rabat's plan to normalize ties with Israel following a deal brokered by the United States in exchange for recognition of its sovereignty over Western Sahara.

The religious arm of the Islamist ruling party, the Unity and Reform Movement, said in a statement that the move was "obscene" and condemned all "attempts at normalization and Zionist infiltration."

The response of the Justice and Development Party, a member of the government, was more moderate, expressing support for King Muhammad VI's policy on the Palestinian issue, reiterating the party's firm stance against the Zionist occupation.

Unlike its government partners who expressed support for the deal immediately after it was announced, it responded to it two days later.

According to a source close to the matter, this was due to disagreements among the party's senior leadership.

A key element in the deal formulated by outgoing President Donald Trump was American recognition of Morocco's claim to sovereignty over Western Sahara.

In the decades-long territorial conflict, Morocco is struggling on the Algerian-backed Polarisario front and seeking to establish an independent state in the desert region.

"The United States has issued an important declaration emphasizing Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces, and it opens new horizons for strengthening Morocco's position in international circles. It further isolates opponents of our territorial integrity," the Islamist party said in a statement.

The Islamist party Jamiaa al-Adal and al-Ahsan, one of the largest in the opposition, said that normalization with Israel was a "stab in the back" on the Palestinian issue.

The US Ambassador to Morocco yesterday unveiled the updated map of the State Department, which included all of Western Sahara as part of Morocco.

Algeria, however, said the United States statement had no validity and that the conflict would be resolved in accordance with international law.

It is unclear how United States President-elect Joe Biden, who will enter the White House on January 20, will act.

Algerian Prime Minister 'Abd al-Aziz Jared attacked the "foreign maneuvers" he said were intended to undermine the region's stability.

"The Zionist entity wants to come closer to our borders," he said yesterday in a speech marking the anniversary of the start of protests against French colonial rule.

Algeria recently passed a new constitution that gives the military the authority to operate outside the country as part of "peacekeeping missions."

The rebels in Western Sahara, formerly a Spanish colony, need the support of Algeria, which has one of the strongest armies in the region, in order to continue the struggle against the most powerful Morocco as promised last month.

As early as last month, the Polisario promised to resume fighting after a 30-year ceasefire, following the entry of Moroccan army forces into a border crossing with Mauritania.

Since the announcement of the establishment of official relations with Israel, it has been reported in the United States that the Trump administration is promoting a UAV and advanced armaments deal with Morocco, worth about $ 1 billion.
