The authorities in Nigeria announced today the loss of hundreds of students after an armed attack on a secondary school in the northwestern state of Katsina.
The Associated Press quoted police spokesman Gambo Lash as saying in a statement that an armed gang consisting of a large number of militants stormed the Science High School in Kankara amid heavy gunfire, noting that about 400 students out of 600 who were in the school at the time of the attack were missing.
The police, army and air force are tracking the attackers and locating them in an attempt to free the kidnapped.
According to a statement issued by Garba Shehu, spokesman for President Muhammadu Buhari, a number of soldiers supported by an air force located the militants in Zango Paula Forest in Kankara region and launched an exchange of fire without confirming whether some of the detained students were released.
In 2014, terrorists from the "Boko Haram" group attacked a school in Chibok district, Borno state, and kidnapped 276 students, of whom about 100 are still missing.
