As the chief legal officer of the House Ways and Means Committee to date, the 46-year-old Yale and Harvard graduate has a very good chance of being confirmed by the Senate.
However, she is not part of the "first circle" of relatives of the future president.
Well known to elected Democrats, and respected by their Republican colleagues in Congress, Katherine Tai is seen as a highly competent technocrat, but without a national political profile.
She is complimented on Capitol Hill for her role in reconciling the interests of unions, environmentalists and the business community with a view to amending the North American Free Trade Agreement, a success for Donald Trump in 2020. She will succeed Bob Lighthizer , Republican lawyer, legendary figure in difficult business cases, chief negotiator
