German Chancellor Angela Merkel said today (Sunday) that all non-essential places and schools will be closed until at least January 10 in order to stop the corona plague.

"I would have been happy for easier steps, but due to Christmas shopping the number of contacts has increased significantly," she told reporters after a meeting with the heads of the 16 countries that make up Germany.

"We need to act urgently."

Only essential places like supermarkets and pharmacies and banks will remain open from 16 December.

Hairdressers, beauty salons and tattoo parlors will also be closed.

The government will support damaged businesses with 11 billion euros a month.

Finance Minister Olaf Schultz said businesses that would have to close could face up to 90% of the losses, or about half a million euros a month.

In addition, employers will be asked to cease operations or relocate their employees.

The sale of fireworks will be banned ahead of New Year's Eve.

Germany is in a partial closure for six weeks, during which the bars and restaurants were closed, while the shops and schools remained open.

Some districts in Germany have already tightened restrictions with the surge in the number of infected.

"The 'easy closure' has had an impact, but not enough," said Bavarian Prime Minister Marcus Zoder.

"The situation is out of control."

Private gatherings will continue to be limited to up to five people from two different households.

During the Christmas holidays, the restriction will soften a bit to allow families to celebrate together.

Merkel and Zoder said it was too early to say whether the economy would reopen after Jan. 10.

In recent days, records have been set in the number of diagnoses, and more and more politicians have expressed concern about the situation.

In the past day, another 20,200 people have been diagnosed, and a total of 1,320,716 since the outbreak.

321 people have died in the last 24 hours, and 21,787 throughout the plague.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, was more successful than other countries on the continent during the first wave of March and April.

However, the second wave hit her harder.
