At the end of the 2010 decade, the European Union will have marked a significant shift in its policy vis-à-vis the web, and particularly with regard to the operating conditions, by the
internet
giants
, of the digital on our continent.
It was first the vote of the general data protection regulation (RGPD) applicable from May 2018, which signaled to the whole world that
data, especially personal data, had to be recognized as private, legally protected property.
The other white stone was laid in the spring of 2019. After tough negotiations, lobbying campaigns, disinformation, and threats, the copyright directive was finally adopted after a long democratic process.
It aimed to regulate the power of content sharing platforms and force them to pay more equitably for creative content and that of the press, the backbone of our cultures and our democracies and on which they are nourished.
