Owner Daniela Müller wants to reopen the traditional inn with a different concept.

Gelting

- The Alte Wirth in Gelting has been closed for a few months.

Nevertheless, the kitchen of the traditional restaurant is used for cooking.

Owner Daniela Müller is at the stove and making preparations for the next day.

A creamy cheese sauce bubbles in a large saucepan.

The cook picks up a tablespoon and tries.

"Fits," says satisfied.

Because sitting around and putting your hands in your lap is out of the question for the lively woman with the short blonde hair.

Mayor Michael Müller's wife has been cooking for schoolchildren and kindergarten children who have their lunch delivered since October.

“That was a coincidence,” says the cook.

Before that, the kitchen stayed cold.

In a way, the first lockdown was to blame.

The inn was closed and there was take-away.

“And suddenly you had time to think,” says the restaurateur who has been running the inn in the center of the village of Gelting for almost four years.

"That's the good thing about Corona."

Together with her husband she thought about how to proceed.

"Because the lockdown has already hit us," admits Michael Müller.

After a guest performance by Gartenberger Bunkerblasmusik in the packed beer garden at the end of July, it was over.

The couple let in craftsmen instead of guests to modernize the rooms.

The style should stay the same, but we want to freshen everything up a bit

"The style should stay the same, but we want to freshen everything up a bit," says Michael Müller.

The innkeepers want to keep the inn, but with a different concept.

Open from Thursday to Sunday and serve á la carte as it used to be, is no longer an option, say the two of them.

The economy with its 160 seats is simply too big for that.

Instead, there should be occasion-related celebrations and events.

The rooms prove to be advantageous: In addition to the large dining room, there are several parlors that are well suited for celebrations in smaller groups.

In November Daniela Müller would have liked to reopen the Alte Wirth.

But then the partial lockdown came and the front door remained closed.

This time, the restaurateur no longer offers take-away.

Then she would need more staff again.

She can manage the current workload together with an employee.

The landlady looks forward to the day when she can reopen her restaurant - even if a date is still in the stars.

“It's nice that I can enjoy the Advent season this time,” says Daniela Müller.

“But I hope that I won't be able to do that again next year.” She misses the guests, the hustle and bustle, the celebrations.

"I'm really looking forward to that."
