When we from the history team asked all colleagues in the SPIEGEL editorial team by email a few weeks ago to give us their best tips for books with historical reference, we couldn't have known that Christmas and the next lockdown would coincide.

The time between the years is always one of the best for a good book - but this year there are all the more reasons to briefly disappear into other realities with a book.

If you are still looking for recommendations: Today you will read about historical deep diving.

And books that also get children and young people excited about history.

And in case you missed it: In part one of our gifts with a story, we presented books about changing perspectives and entertainingly getting smarter.

And part two was about biographies and historical novels.

For people who want to delve deeply into history:

Barbara W. Tuchman: »August 1914«

Before the First World War froze into a more than four-year war of attrition, Europe experienced four weeks of impetuous, almost intoxicating movement.

The Germans rolled towards Paris, the English crossed the Canal, the Belgians fought for their lives, the French for their homeland.

Can you describe the sequence of the battles in such a way that it becomes a monumental painting

and

great literature at the same time?

Barbara Tuchman won the Pulitzer Prize for this book.

The first paragraph alone justifies the award: There has hardly ever been a history book written smarter, more elegant, more melancholy.
