(CNN Spanish) ––

The Minister of Health of the Dominican Republic, Plutarco Arias, reported this Monday that the country registers a rebound in covid-19 infections.

And he stressed that it is due to the indiscipline of the population, just when the Christmas season begins.

Arias indicated that people tend not to keep physical distance in bars and restaurants.

Also, that many violate the curfew in force throughout the country on a daily basis.

Some 10,000 people have been infected and 31 have died of covid-19 so far in December in the Dominican Republic, according to official figures.

The president of the Waldo Ariel Suero Medical College assures that the Government has been "very permissive towards the economic and productive sector, and suggests that the curfew be maintained and the restriction measures be extended."

On November 30, the Executive Branch extended the national curfew for 20 more days from Monday to Friday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and on weekends from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Since the beginning of July, the government began gradually the total reopening of economic activities.

Suero warns that hospital occupancy has also increased and threatens to re-create a health crisis due to the possible lack of beds in intensive care units.

Given the disrespect of the restrictive regulations by some citizens, the Health Minister warned that they could adopt more drastic measures.

According to the epidemiological bulletin this Monday, 492 new infections were reported in the last 24 hours for a total of 155,184 registered cases of coronavirus.

The document also indicates that 2,364 people have died from the disease.
