10 referendums, including 5 organized by de Gaulle
The founding referendum of the Fifth Republic was that of September 29, 1958 by which 82.6% of the French approved the Constitution proposed to them by General de Gaulle.
This popular consultation was used only twice to revise the Constitution: by de Gaulle in October 1962, to establish the election of the President of the Republic by universal suffrage (62.3% of yes), and by Jacques Chirac in September 2000 to reduce the presidential term of office from seven to five years (73.2% yes).
