A man in Japan who pleaded guilty to killing nine people in a high-profile mass murder case in 2017 received a death sentence on Tuesday, the Tachikawa section of the Tokyo District Court confirmed to CNN. .
The court convicted Takahiro Shiraishi, 30, of murdering, raping, dismembering and storing the bodies of the nine victims in his apartment in Zama, Kanagawa prefecture, outside Tokyo, the court said.
CNN previously reported that Shiraishi was arrested in October 2017. This after police searched his home to investigate the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman who had posted suicide notes on social media such as Twitter.
Three portable refrigerators and five containers were found in Shiraishi's room.
Inside were human heads and bones with the flesh torn off, according to TV Asahi, which cited police sources.
The nine victims included eight women and a man between the ages of 15 and 26, according to Japanese national broadcaster NHK and CNN affiliate TV Asahi, which cited court proceedings.
The victims had posted online that they wanted to commit suicide.
Shiraishi subsequently contacted them via social media platforms, NHK and TV Asahi reported.
Shiraishi pleaded guilty to murdering the victims.
He said in court that he had killed them to satisfy his sexual desire, according to reports.
NHK added that Shiraishi does not intend to appeal the verdict.
He will be on death row until the Japanese Minister of Justice signs the execution order.
