Donald Trump is defeated, but the election campaign continues: In Georgia, Joe Biden is now campaigning for votes for the Senate runoff election. How powerful he becomes as president depends on the outcome.

Six weeks after the US presidential election, the winner Joe Biden campaigned again: The 78-year-old campaigned for two Senate candidates from his Democratic Party in the state of Georgia on Tuesday.

Voters would have to vote as if their lives depended on it, "because it does," Biden said.

During an appearance in the capital, Atlanta, he called on voters in the southern state to vote for Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in the January 5 Senate runoff election.

"Send me these two men and we will control the Senate and we will change the lives of the people of Georgia," Biden said in the traditionally conservative state.

"It's time to get up and get our democracy back."

Polls predict close races

The two Senate runoff elections are of key importance because they will determine the future majority in the US Senate.

As things stand, the Republicans of the elected President Donald Trump have 50 seats in the Congress Chamber with 100 senators, Biden's Democrats 48. The Republicans only have to win one of the runoff elections in Georgia to continue to hold a majority in the Senate.

This could make it much more difficult for Biden to rule.

The Democrats, on the other hand, have to win both runoff elections to get the same number of senators as the Conservatives.

In this case they would have an advantage: In stalemate situations, the future Vice President Kamala Harris, who by virtue of her office is also Senate President, has the casting vote.

In the runoff elections, Ossoff and Warnock will run against Republican Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler.

Polls predict close races.

So-called early voting began on Monday, i.e. voting in advance of the actual election date.

Biden had narrowly won Georgia against Trump in the November 3 presidential election.

This made him the first successful Democratic presidential candidate in the state in almost three decades - since Bill Clinton in 1992.
