From competitor to cabinet member: Pete Buttigieg, once himself an aspirant for the fight for the White House, is apparently supposed to take up a ministerial post in Joe Biden's government team.

According to media reports, the former US presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg will become Minister of Transport under future President Joe Biden.

The news channel CNN and the Washington Post reported on Tuesday that Biden had chosen the 38-year-old who caused a sensation in the Democratic primary campaign.

The eloquent former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, had gone from an outsider to a serious contender for the Democratic presidential run.

The openly homosexual politician and representative of the political center finished first and second in the first two primaries in February.

As a result, however, he fell back more and more.

Buttigieg finally got out of the presidential race in March, which became more and more a duel between Biden and the left-wing Senator Bernie Sanders.

He then stood behind Biden.

He also supported him in the election campaign against President Donald Trump.

The Afghanistan veteran is considered one of the Democratic Party's great hopes for young talent.

It was almost certain that Buttigieg would belong to the government, but it was unclear which office he would hold.

The Victory Institute, which advocates the concerns of LGBTQ politicians, said Buttigieg would become the first openly homosexual politician with a permanent cabinet post if approved by the Senate.

That is a "milestone".

Under Trump, the openly gay former US ambassador to Berlin, Richard Grenell, already temporarily had cabinet rank in his function as executive secretary service director.

However, this only for a few months and without confirmation by the Senate.

Biden had promised to create a government team that would reflect the diversity of the US population.

He has nominated a number of ministers since beating Trump in the November 3 presidential election.

His longtime foreign policy advisor Antony Blinken is said to be foreign minister, former Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen as the first woman in US history to become Treasury Secretary and the retired four-star General Lloyd Austin as the first African American Secretary of Defense.

The electorate in the USA confirmed the victory of Joe Biden's presidential election on Tuesday night (CET).

Biden is scheduled to be sworn in as US President on January 20, 2021.
