The United Nations has called on world leaders to take bold steps to reduce the tremendous pressure exerted on the environment and the natural world, otherwise the progress of mankind will be halted.

The United Nations News Center quoted the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as saying in the Human Development Report for 2020 released today that the "Covid 19" pandemic is the latest crisis facing the world, but if people do not lift their grip on nature, it will not be the last crisis.

In turn, Achim Steiner, Director of the United Nations Development Program, said that “humans have more power than ever before on the planet,” explaining that “in the wake of the (Covid 19) outbreak, record temperatures and rising inequalities, it is time to use this power to redefine what we mean by progress where it is no longer. The carbon footprint on consumption is a hidden matter. ”The physical footprint refers to the amount of raw materials extracted to meet final consumption requirements.

Steiner added: "As this report shows, no country in the world has yet achieved very high human development without imposing enormous pressure on this planet, but we can be the first generation to correct this error."

According to the report, 50 countries have graduated from the group of very high human development, which reflects their dependence on fossil fuels and the physical footprint, indicating that afforestation and better care for forests before 2030 can contribute to preventing global warming from reaching two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

It is estimated that by the year 2100, the world's poorest countries could experience up to 100 additional days of extreme weather due to climate change each year, a figure that could be cut in half if the Paris climate agreement is fully implemented, the report said.
