Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today (Wednesday) that US sanctions imposed on Turkey following the acquisition of Russian defense systems are a "hostile attack" on its sovereign rights and its security industry, and that the move is destined to fail.

Washington this week imposed sanctions on Turkey's Defense Industry Administration, its head and three other workers over its opposition to the acquisition of Russia's S-400 air defense system.

In a first public response to the move, Erdogan said Turkey would overcome the problems stemming from the sanctions.

He promised to step up efforts to establish an independent defense industry, while criticizing Washington.

What kind of alliance is this?

What is this partnership?

This decision is a blatantly hostile attack on the sovereign rights of our country, "Erdogan said in a televised speech." The real goal is to halt our country's recent progress in the defense industry and make us dependent on them again (in the United States).

There will certainly be problems, but every problem will open a door for us to solve. "

Turkey claims that it had no choice but to purchase the S-400 system, as it was unable to obtain air defense systems from NATO allies under satisfactory conditions.

Washington, meanwhile, says S-400 missiles pose a threat to F-35s and NATO's broader defense systems. Turkey rejects this, saying Russian systems will not be integrated into NATO, of which the two countries are members.

Erdogan today reiterated Turkey's claims that the American concern has no technical justification.

He said Ankara had created close to a thousand parts for the F-35s, even though it was removed from the program last year.

Turkey was also expected to purchase more than a hundred of the focused stealth aircraft.

Sanctions were imposed at a delicate time in the strained relations between Ankara and Washington, ahead of the inauguration of Democratic President-elect Joe Biden on Jan. 20, replacing outgoing Republican President Donald Trump.

Erdogan's communications director, Fertin Elton, said the sanctions would be a burden on the Biden administration, but noted that Ankara believes Washington will repeat "this grave mistake without delay".

He added that the sanctions portray Washington as an unreliable ally within NATO. Russia and Iran, which have come closer to Turkey in recent years, have also condemned US sanctions.

"This crisis will go down in history as a failure of American diplomacy.

"For the United States, which we see as an important ally, to experience such numbness, despite our efforts to defend our mutual interests on the basis of equality, is a loss for them," he told the Axem newspaper.

Erdogan said last week that he would discuss with the US administration tensions between countries Biden to the White House. At the end of his speech today, the president revealed documentation of a new missile defense system manufactured by Turkey, + HISAR-A, which he said was delayed due to an embargo on a part that Turkey imports. He did not say from which country Turkey imports it.
