Due to the corona pandemic, the opening took place very quietly and without an official date.

District administrator, mayor and the state building authority are happy anyway.

- The classic photo with men in suits standing in a good mood on a street and cutting a ribbon - this time there is no photo.

In response to current events, the Weilheim State Building Authority yesterday decided not to hold an official inauguration date for the piercing through Petersbrunner Strasse.

Nevertheless, traffic has been rolling unhindered to and from B 2 since Wednesday afternoon - a good 13 months after the demolition of the duplex that stood at this point.

Those responsible are satisfied even without a photo session.

"The construction of the B 2 tunnel gave us the opportunity to rearrange the traffic area on Petersbrunner Strasse and to cater to the needs of pedestrians and cyclists," explains Mayor Patrick Janik.

For example, the city had a continuously wide walkway and bike path built along Petersbrunner Strasse between Gautinger and Münchner Strasse.

With the breakthrough, a key component for the northern approach route to the tunnel was also completed.

As is well known, Petersbrunner Strasse will in future be the main development for the industrial area. Gautinger Strasse will lose this function in the future because there will be hardly any turning opportunities at its intersection with B 2.

Raphael Zuber, Head of the Mining Tunneling Department at the State Building Authority, speaks of a "first milestone for the tunnel project" against this background.

The breakthrough and thus the new connection to the B 2 will play a key role on the northern tunnel approach route, explains Zuber and primarily thanks the property owners "for their cooperation and understanding".

"The Starnberg Tunnel is a topic that has been bothering people in the city of Starnberg for many years," emphasizes District Administrator Stefan Frey, who, as the CSU city councilor at the time, played a key role in the city council's tunnel decision in February 2017.

"I am glad that we are finally seeing the first concrete steps and that this not-so-small-scale construction project was carried out relatively calmly." That makes him confident about the future construction sites with regard to the tunnel work.

He is particularly pleased that the traffic situation in front of the district office has also been improved, explains Frey.

"The safety for cyclists and pedestrians is increased by separate lanes between cyclists and pedestrians in the intersection areas, red installation areas, flashing lights and the crossing island with traffic lights at the level of the district office," emphasizes the district administrator.

Ground guidance systems and other measures also catered to the needs of people with disabilities.

The renovation of the 600 meter long section of Petersbrunner Strasse cost a total of 3.5 million euros, according to the building authority.

The federal government pays 1.5 million euros of this, while the Free State's funding is 760,000 euros.

According to the town hall, the city bears a share of the costs of 1.24 million euros.

The tunnel work is now finally in the winter break.

In the coming year, among other things, further lines and channels will be laid.

The laying of a separate power line for the tunnel boring machine is also on the agenda for 2021.
