How the nickname of David Schumacher (20) from Benediktbeuern became the unofficial Bavarian “word of the year”.

Benediktbeuern

- A headline in the Bavaria section of our newspaper caused amusement in a Benediktbeur family a few days ago.

When Bavarian expert Karl Simon, member of the Friends of the Bavarian Language and Dialects, said: "For me, Gschmeidig is the word of the year", David Schumann (20) felt immediately addressed, "Gschmeidig" is the nickname he even got in embroidered form on the braces of his leather pants.

The 20-year-old is studying economics and social sciences - actually in Vienna, but because currently only online lectures are taking place, he is in Benediktbeuern.

Mr. Schumann, a headline in Tölzer Kurier made you laugh these days.

How was that exactly?

That was funny.

My father woke me up and put the newspaper article “Gschmeidig is the word of the year” at my breakfast table.

I was very amazed because everyone calls me “smooth”.

I sent it to a couple of friends, and they all thought it was very funny.

This line made for a lot of joy in these times when there isn't so much to laugh about.

How did you come up with this unusual nickname?

We go on vacation to Italy every year with other families.

Once I was posted to watch some of the smaller children playing badminton and gave them tips on how to play: “smooth”.

Later the children asked: What is the real name of “Gschmeidig”?

This is how my family first called me “Gschmeidig” in jest, then it spread to the youth orchestra and the rest of the circle of friends.

My mother later even embroidered the names on the reading braces.

What does the expression "pliable" mean to you?

An unbelievable amount - a word that contains different things.

There is a part of cosiness in it, commitment, not taking everything so seriously and also what is called "bearish" in Tyrol.

And are you "supple"?

I hope I'm on my way to be.
