The overtired driver of a van only dozed off behind the wheel for seconds while he was driving on the A8 near Brunnthal - but that had fatal consequences.
Brunnthal - As the police reported, the accident happened this Wednesday early in the morning.
According to this, a 57-year-old Italian was driving a Renault pickup truck on the A8 towards the north at about 4:20 a.m. when his vehicle drifted to the right of the lane as a result of a second's sleep and then crashed into the rear of a Polish articulated lorry.
At this point in time, the tractor-trailer was illegally parked in an emergency bay.
Small truck overturns
Although it overturned his van after the collision with the semi-trailer, the Italian was able to get out of the van unharmed.
The driver of the parked articulated lorry was also uninjured in the accident.
100,000 euros in property damage
According to the police, an economic total loss occurred on the van.
The rear of the parked semi-trailer and its load were also badly damaged, so that the total amount of damage is estimated at around 100,000 euros.
The van was no longer ready to drive and had to be towed away.
Criminal proceedings were initiated against the person who caused the accident because of the danger to road traffic as a result of physical defects.
Since he could not show a permanent residence in Germany, the public prosecutor ordered a security deposit to enforce the criminal proceedings.
A fine procedure was also initiated against the driver of the tractor-trailer that was illegally parked at the time of the accident.
In this specific case, the nationwide catalog of facts provides for a fine of 105 euros.
Hard shoulder and right lane closed
To secure and clear the scene of the accident, both the Holzkirchen motorway maintenance depot and the Holzkirchen and Otterfing fire departments were on duty for several hours.
While the accident was being recorded, the hard shoulder and the right-hand lane at the level of the accident site had to be closed for about two hours.
