The Secretary of Justice Zheng Ruohua said today (16th) that recent local and foreign words and deeds against the judiciary and personnel have reached a level of intimidation. He also criticized some people for asking the government to release some of the arrested persons in order to affect the independent prosecution power of the judiciary. She emphasized that these actions would be futile.

Zheng Ruohua said that anyone in society has the right to discuss the judgment of a case objectively and rationally. He should not "clapping his hands" just because he likes certain judgment results, or accuse judges if he dislikes certain judgment results, describing assault on judges in the judicial system. The law is not allowed. As the Secretary for Justice, she will definitely stand up to respond to these criticisms.

She pointed out that everyone is also responsible for respecting the rule of law and maintaining judicial independence. When the judicial system is attacked, the Attorney General, the two legal professional bodies, and the public should also stand up in due course.

Regarding Britain’s proposal to stop sending judges to serve as non-permanent judges of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, Zheng Ruohua said that Hong Kong’s judicial independence has a solid foundation, which can be reflected in the appointment of judges and transparency in judgments. She said that she is very happy to have non-permanent judges participating in Hong Kong. Judicial work means that these foreign judges are not only involved in civil and commercial cases, but also involved in constitutional cases. This reflects that the independence of the judiciary and its mechanism are very stable. It is hoped that these well-known foreign judges will continue to participate in the judicial work of Hong Kong.
