While traveling has become almost impossible this year, many are already thinking of 2021. But how many Germans really want to go on vacation so soon despite Corona?

This year traveling was difficult and sometimes even impossible.

Many Germans are now looking forward to their 2021 vacation - and even want to travel more or longer than usual. This is shown by a survey by the travel search engine momondo.de.

1,033 Germans between the ages of 18 and 65 were asked about their travel plans in autumn 2020.

Enormous travel slump during the corona pandemic

At the beginning of 2020, Germans were still dreaming of beach holidays (46 percent) and city trips (37 percent), as the “International Travel Survey” by Kayak showed among 25,000 participants from 24 different countries - including 1,000 from Germany.

But then the pandemic came: suddenly borders were closed, travel destinations were declared risk areas and there was a risk of several weeks of quarantine if you did go there.

No wonder that many changed their travel plans or dropped them completely.

Accordingly, momondo registered around 79 percent fewer online searches for flights in March, April and May 2020 - exactly during the first wave of the pandemic - than in the same period of the previous year.

But according to a recent momondo survey, there are other signs for 2021.

After Corona: Don't just travel, but "travel more" - Germans are planning for 2021

40 percent of Germans say they want to travel more in 2021

.

They want to catch up on what they missed in 2020 - and 44 percent even want to book a trip within the next six months.

Domestic travel is the least attractive

: only 13 percent said they would like to go on vacation in Germany next year.

The results are thus in direct contradiction to an evaluation that the HomeToGo portal recently published.

If the Germans could choose it according to the momondo survey, they would probably be drawn to the

classic holiday destinations

- regardless of the security

guidelines - according to this, the most popular travel destinations for Germans in the first quarter of 2021 are all-time favorites like Istanbul , Las Palmas, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife and London.

Fittingly, London - just like Dublin, Madrid, Milan or Barcelona - is one of the travel destinations with the cheapest flight prices between January and March 2021 (return flights cost between 81 and 89 euros on average).

When traveling outside of Europe, destinations like Bangkok, Dubai, the Maldives, Cancun and Honolulu are among the most popular destinations.

In

2021, the means of travel of choice will be the airplane

- 70 percent of those surveyed want to fly, only one in five (20 percent) will choose their own car or rental car.

When looking for a place to stay, the respondents mainly prefer well-known hotel chains (33 percent) or their own holiday home (32 percent).

The most important thing for German travelers when planning their trip, however, is neither the accommodation nor the means of transport for the journey: 35 percent of them pay particular attention to the Corona-related security guidelines on site.

Have the quarantine requirements been lifted?
