The second lockdown is having a hard time affecting the catering industry.

As in the spring, some innkeepers hope to be able to make up for part of their losses with the pick-up business.

But the big wave of orders has so far failed to materialize.

  • The second lockdown hits the catering industry particularly hard

  • The to-go business is not doing as well as it was during the initial lockdown

  • Some offer take-away meals on the Christmas holidays

Geretsried

- The “Da Daniele” café-bar on Sudetenstrasse is unfamiliar.

"At the moment I'm only in the shop with my wife," says Daniele Sangermano.

Every now and then he calls in an employee to help out in the kitchen to “give them a little support”.

Often, however, this is not necessary: "Orders keep coming in, but in general the situation is not good for us at all," says the Italian.

The restaurateur tries to get through the crisis with a few take-away coffees and occasional food orders: “It's not the good business that we would otherwise do, but it's definitely better than not generating any income.” His Sangermano would like to keep the store open for collectors.

"We have to get through this difficult time somehow."

"It's not the good business we would otherwise be doing, but it's definitely better than not making any income."

Daniele Sangermano and Umile Amodio do not expect the lockdown to end anytime soon.

Its traditional restaurant Italy on Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Strasse is currently experiencing “major sales losses”, as Amodio openly admits.

"During the initial lockdown, the pickup business was better," he says.

He can only speculate why customers are currently more cautious: “The canteens in the offices are open at lunchtime.

And Christmas is just around the corner - maybe that's why people are a little more economical. "

Amodio finds it depressing that the catering industry is suffering so severely from the corona pandemic: "We have adhered to all requirements, have developed hygiene concepts and spent a lot of money to meet all the rules - and now we are being punished."

Stay afloat with Christmas cookies and cake

Jutta Waldmann expresses understanding for the restrictions: “At the moment I don't want to be in the shoes of the decision-makers,” she says.

"Either way, they would be criticized." For their lounge on Karl-Lederer-Platz and the confectionery on Sudetenstrasse, the Christmas business is a small lifeline: "Our cookies, gingerbread, pastries and cakes are keeping us afloat at the moment." Over the holidays and in January, Waldmann would like to offer their goods during the usual opening times.

She has deleted other offers: “We do not offer our breakfast menu to be picked up.

There is simply not much demand, it is not worth it. ”Waldmann had to stop selling mulled wine on Karl-Lederer-Platz because of the stricter Corona requirements.

However, coffee, cappuccino and non-alcoholic hot drinks still wander over the counter.

The restaurateur had to put most of her employees on short-time work.

“Unfortunately, it wouldn't be possible any other way,” she explains.

A small team is also on duty in the Greek restaurant Ammos on Neuen Platz.

The restaurant offers all meals from the menu for self-collectors.

"At the moment it's very difficult for us," says host Ilias Tzanas.

Compared to the first lockdown, orders have decreased.

“The problem is affecting all the restaurateurs I have spoken to at the moment,” says the Greek.

Tzanas cannot explain why.

“In the first lockdown, the response was very good.

We hope that this will increase again now. "

Christmas roast to go

The kitchen is currently cold in the council chambers.

The pick-up business should start again just in time for the Christmas holidays.

If you order in advance by December 22nd, you can get Christmas goose, farm duck or schnitzel.

The order form can be found on the Ratsstuben's homepage.

Holiday meals can be picked up between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

"After that, from December 28th, we will again be offering some dishes from our menu for pick-up," says restaurant manager Martina Bauer.

Which dishes these will be has not yet been determined.

“It is very difficult for us to plan ahead.” Even Bauer does not expect the lockdown to end quickly.

But she doesn't give up hope: "I still believe that it will get better at some point and that we can welcome the guests back to the restaurant."
