The Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador reported this Wednesday that the National Agency for Regulation, Control and Sanitary Surveillance (Arcsa) authorized the application of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine in the country.

The head of the portfolio, Juan Carlos Zevallos, indicated that this will be the first to arrive in the country, "probably" in January 2021, and that "it will be distributed to sentinel hospitals that treat patients with covid-19."

At a press conference, Zevallos announced that the vaccination plan will be through a public and private alliance.

The strategy "will allow applying the two doses to 60% of the population, with the aim of controlling the spread of the virus and reducing the impact of the disease on the health of Ecuadorians," according to a statement from the Ministry of Health.

The plan will be executed in three phases.

In the zero or pilot plan, 50,000 doses will be applied to first-line personnel and older adults in geriatric centers and their workers, according to the government of Ecuador.

In phase one, which would begin in late March or early April, health personnel, law enforcement, firefighters, waste collection officials, strategic sectors and vulnerable groups would be massively vaccinated.

Zevallos explained that “all people 18 years of age or older (corresponding to phase 2 and 3) will receive the vaccines, except those with a bleeding disorder, severe allergic reactions to medicines or vaccines, people infected with coronavirus, immunosuppressed or receiving treatments against cancer and pregnant women, or who have planned to get pregnant in the next 3 months ”.

As of Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reported 203,461 cases of coronavirus and 9,373 confirmed deaths, although there are also 4,542 probable deaths.
