Refugees in the Serbian village of Majdan: the end of the Balkan route

2020-12-17T20:31:41.779Z

In the Serbian village of Majdan, right on the border with Hungary and Romania, around 450 migrants are waiting at the gates of the EU - often without a chance of an asylum procedure. A ECJ ruling could change this now.

Mahmood, refugee from Syria

“I've been living here for about a month now.

I'm here without a shower, without anything.

Sometimes I have something to eat. "

No shower, no heating and just a meal every now and then - a month ago Mahmood's escape from Syria ended for the time being in this empty house, the Hungarian and Romanian borders in sight, but barely negotiable.

Here in the Serbian village of Majdan, around 450 migrants are waiting for asylum in the EU.

Many have tried to cross the border without success.

Farhadi, refugee from Morocco

“(I will) go to Europe.

But (in which country) I don't know.

We tried from Romania, Hungary, Croatia or Bosnia, but we have so many problems.

That's the truth."

Since the so-called Balkan route was closed and Hungary built a border fence with Serbia, fewer refugees have come over the route.

Those who still make it here are often stranded in places like Majdan.

The population of the village has almost quadrupled due to the newcomers - a stress test for the residents.

Abraham Rudolf, local resident

“Hundreds of them run around during the night.

Even when you're in your own house (it feels like) they're in the apartment. "

Verica Vas, Local Authority

“We don't usually have any problems with them.

As for their behavior, they are perfectly normal people as far as we can see.

But they're homeless and have to sleep somewhere, so they break into old abandoned houses, sometimes newer ones, and stay there. "

There are many places like Majdan on the EU border: around 6,000 refugees are currently in Serbia.

You can currently only apply for asylum at the Hungarian embassies in Kiev or Budapest - the EU Commission is complaining against this: it does not see access to an asylum procedure as guaranteed.

In another case, the European Court of Justice ruled on Wednesday that it was inadmissible for Hungary to deport migrants illegally located in the country without examining the individual case.

Often they are forced by police officers behind a fence, from which the only way to Serbia leads.

Hungary now has to adapt its asylum practice and thus possibly create new perspectives for the people in Majdan.
