The systems of the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Department of Energy in the United States, which strengthen the country's nuclear weapons stockpile, have been hacked by hackers, Politico reported tonight (Thursday), according to state officials involved.
According to sources, the break-in is part of an extensive espionage operation that has affected at least six federal agencies.
Officials at both bodies reported the violation to congressional oversight bodies, after being briefed by Rocky Campiona, chief information officer at the energy department.
They located suspicious activity in networks belonging to the Energy Commission, Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories in New Mexico and Washington, the Department of Secure Transportation and other offices.
The hackers were able to cause more damage to the energy department than to the other agencies.

Federal investigators have been scanning the networks in recent days to determine which computers the hackers were able to hack into, and to what exact information they were exposed.
According to officials, they may not have known the extent of the full damage "for weeks."
The administration did not respond to a request for comment.
The attack on the Department of Energy is a clear sign that the hackers have been able to access networks belonging to a major part of American national security organizations.
The hackers gained access to federal agency networks through hacking of SolarWinds software, which secures hundreds of government and private customers.
