Auto insurance is the most expensive in the South of France

2020-12-18T10:11:10.969Z

The prices make the big difference according to the departments. The differences are partly explained by the concentration of cars and therefore the number of accidents.

Deviations of up to 86%.

This is what the Best Insurance comparator found when sifting through the prices of auto insurance in the departments.

In a study, published this Friday, the comparator comes to the conclusion that driving around the Mediterranean is much more expensive than elsewhere.

Along with Île-de-France, this region is the one where auto insurance prices are the highest.

A 36-year-old couple with two children, driving in a new 3008, will thus pay their car insurance 443 euros in Deux-Sèvres compared to 827 euros in Bouches-du-Rhône.

The national average is 527 euros.

For a young driver of 21 who drives a 208, the situation is the same.

He will pay 1963 euros in the Bouches-du-Rhône against 1,062 euros in Aveyron for a national average of 1,307 euros.

Difference in claims

After the Bouches-du-Rhône, it is the two departments of Corsica, Seine-Saint-Denis and the Alpes-Maritimes which occupy the first five places in the ranking of the highest tariffs.

At the other end of the ranking, with prices below 500 euros, Corrèze, Creuse, Côtes-d'Armor and Vendée join Deux-Sèvres as one of the most economical departments, “

more than 15% under the national average

, ”notes the comparator.

This large gap between the departments of the South, Ile-de-France and those of Aveyron, Creuse or Deux-Sèvres, is partly explained, according to the comparator, by the density of vehicles, which is greater. in the first regions mentioned than in the rest of France.

"

There are therefore more collisions on a more recent fleet than elsewhere on the territory, which induces more expensive repairs to carry out

", decrypts Fabien Soccio, spokesperson for Meilleure Insurance.

And who says more accidents and expensive repairs means higher premiums.

Conversely, in more rural areas, the loss experience is lower and therefore lower prices.

Play the competition

The only way to reduce the bill: compare prices and do not hesitate to change car insurance regularly.

Insurers tend to be more generous with new customers than with older ones.

"

This meets high commercial objectives among insurers who take more care of prospects with sometimes very interesting promotions

: free months, free additional guarantees, etc.",

explains Fabien Soccio.

This practice has been pinned down by the UFC-Que Choisir.

In a recent survey, the consumer defense association pointed to certain insurers who granted discounts of up to 200 euros for their new customers but nothing for old ones.

"

Where the shoe pinch is that these broken prices are financed by loyal policyholders

," she noted, denouncing a "

loyalty penalty

".

The UFC-Que Choisir also calls on motorists not to hesitate to request discounts from their insurers, especially in this period of crisis.

Insurance companies have indeed, according to her, made significant savings during the first confinement and can return part of it if the insured claims it.

And in case of refusal, the association urges the French to play competition, "in

particular for the benefit of more virtuous insurers

".
