US Vice President Mike Pence was given Pfizer / BioNTech's coronavirus vaccine on Friday, an injection broadcast live on television as the United States prepares to authorize a second vaccine.
He said he was "happy to have received this safe and effective vaccine."
“I didn't feel anything,” he added.
“We are gathered here this morning to build confidence” in this vaccine, said Mike Pence, who was vaccinated with his wife.
The US vice-president, responsible for coordinating the fight against the pandemic in recent months from the White House, has been vaccinated as Europe sees several of its leaders placed in quarantine before Christmas.
President-elect Joe Biden is due to be vaccinated next week, also live on television.
Moderna vaccine very quickly approved
Pence also claimed that formal clearance for Moderna's vaccine was still pending: "We have one, and maybe in a few hours, two safe and effective vaccines against the coronavirus."
"When approved, which we expect later today, we will be in a position to send vaccines across the country next week," he added.
