Mexican composer Armando Manzanero is hospitalized after contracting the coronavirus

The Yucatecan teacher, known for great musical successes such as 'I don't know you', 'Under the table' and 'We are boyfriends', began to experience symptoms since last Tuesday, according to Mexican media.


The Mexican composer Armando Manzanero, known for great musical successes such as 'No sé tú', 'Under the table' and 'Somos novios', was hospitalized this Thursday after contracting the coronavirus, confirmed the Society of Authors and Composers of Mexico ( SACM). 

The Society, chaired by the Yucatecan teacher, did not offer details about his state of health. 

Manzanero, who turned 85 on December 7, had been

experiencing flu-like symptoms since last Tuesday

, according to the Mexican digital newspaper Milenio. 

The media said that the musician attended last Sunday and Monday to make recordings at the SACM headquarters and that on Tuesday, after presenting a discomfort "he was treated at home; however, because the treatment did not report good results, he had to be hospitalized this morning with the intention of giving him adequate care. " 

Manzanero is among one of the most vulnerable groups to the pandemic: the elderly.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults are at higher risk of requiring hospitalization or dying from COVID-19. 

The Yucatecan teacher received a face-to-face homage over the weekend in his homeland, Mérida, Yucatán, where they inaugurated a museum to honor his artistic work.

Manzanero also traveled to the United States in November for the Billboard Awards.

The composer's acclaimed ballads and boleros, among which are also included 'This afternoon I saw it rain' and 'With you I learned', have been performed by such artists as Alejandro Sanz, Ricardo Montaner, Luis Miguel and Tony Bennett.

According to the Mexican Ministry of Health, as of Thursday, December 17, the country had registered 1,289,298 coronavirus infections.

Since the start of the pandemic, the virus has claimed the lives of some 116,000 Mexicans.
