Presidential 2022: Roussel pleads for "a communist candidacy" rather than an alliance with Mélenchon

2020-12-18T10:32:05.963Z

The national secretary of the PCF wants to propose a campaign "without excess and without excess". A sort of snub to the Insubordinate for whom the support of the Communists would be a real plus.

Fabien Roussel plays with the nerves of Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

The national secretary of the Communist Party does not seem to want the outstretched hand of the rebellious candidate for the presidential election of 2022. And he even pleads, on the contrary, for an independent candidacy of his party.

"I personally think that there is a need for a communist candidacy for the presidential election to bring this need to fundamentally transform this society"

, he judged Friday morning on France Info.

As in 2012 and 2017, the leader of LFI, however, relies on the support of the Communists to campaign.

The latter also sent a letter to Fabien Roussel on Tuesday to try to convince him and his family, by promising "

an agreement on the program

" and, unlike 2017, "

on common candidatures for the legislative elections

".

"Jean-Luc declared his candidacy (...) on his own, without asking our opinion"

In a more unofficial manner, an alliance would also allow the rebellious candidate to draw from the pool of elected Communists to more easily reach the famous 500 signatures necessary for a candidacy, and thus avoid any fear.

An agreement would also allow the deputy of the South-East to benefit from the culture and the militant discipline of the troops of the Place du Colonel-Fabien.

A significant asset for a presidential campaign.

But all this still seems far from being won.

The national secretary of the Communist Party has indeed joked:

"Jean-Luc declared his candidacy a few weeks ago, all alone, without asking our opinion, and now he tells us that we have to go together" .

Although half-hearted, Fabien Roussel then questioned the behavior that Jean-Luc Mélenchon could sometimes have.

"The difference is that we want - the way I see it myself - to carry our candidacy which unites, which unites, without excess and without excess, with a project bearing hope"

, explained the leader of the Communists, by saying that they want to carry

"the anger of the working world"

and

"take power over money".

Poker shot?

Beyond ambition, the Communist Party could be faced with a major obstacle: the financial cost of such a project.

The rule stipulates that only candidates who cross the 5% threshold in the first round of the presidential election can benefit from reimbursement of campaign costs.

However, during the last independent candidacy of the PCF in 2007, Marie-George Buffet had collected only ... 1.93% of the votes.

More recently, the score of the Communists in the 2019 European elections (last national election) was not promising either: the head of the list, Ian Brossat, won only 2.49% of the vote.

So, a liar poker move from Fabien Roussel to take control of the negotiations with the Insoumis?

“We have not yet made our decision, the debate is opening at home.

I give you the feeling that is mine, ”

said the leader of the Communists, appointed to this post in 2018, particularly on this position.

A vote by activists is scheduled for October 9 to settle this thorny issue.
