Syria and Russia signed a joint statement stating that they will not be the first to deploy weapons in space.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement today that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr. Faisal Al-Miqdad signed the joint statement in Moscow yesterday, noting that “this document has become an important new step within the framework of the globalization of an international initiative on banning the deployment of weapons in space for the sake of Uniting the efforts of countries to prevent an arms race in outer space.

The statement pointed out that “since this document is the only measure of transparency and trust that is relied upon in implementing the objectives of the plan to prevent an arms race in outer space, this initiative is an important political factor that contributes to ensuring equal and indivisible security for all, which increases predictability and sustainability. “State activities in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes”.

The statement pointed out that the Russian Federation and Syria affirmed the necessity of concluding an international treaty prohibiting the deployment and use of weapons in outer space and called on states that are not parties to the initiative to "ban the first deployment of weapons in space" to consider the possibility of full accession to it.
