The inquiries on the cause of death by HKUST student Zhou Zi today (18th) entered the 21st day.

In order to let the jury know more about the environment of the parking lot and save time on site visits, the court plans to introduce a virtual reality system for the first time.

On that day, the inquest was moved to the court meeting room. A projection screen measuring about 2 meters by 4 meters was placed in the room. The jury and Zi Le’s parents wore stereo glasses to watch the virtual reality video.

A senior government chemist who is responsible for the production of virtual images assisted and explained how to use point cloud technology and 360-degree video to produce images.

The inquiry will be resumed on the 28th of this month, and Dr. Cheng will analyze the time of the fall of the black shadow suspected to be Zile.

The court will also integrate multiple closed-circuit television recordings to show the walking routes of people in the parking lot that day.

The deceased Zhou Zile (22 years old) was found lying on the lower platform on the second floor of the Suntech Parking Lot A at about 1 am on November 4 last year during the conflict between the police and the people. He died on the 8th of the same month.

Senior chemist making virtual reality

Dr. Cheng Yuqi, a senior government chemist in charge of producing virtual reality images, testified as an expert witness. He is currently in charge of crime scene investigations at the government laboratory. He has participated in the independent hearing of the Lamma Shipwreck and the traffic accident on Tai Po Road in 2018. .

Record in 3D

Zheng confessed that it was an independent forensic analysis of the cause of death inquest, including a detailed investigation and analysis of closed-circuit television recordings at the scene.

He initially recorded the lens position with notes and photos, and measured the scene environment, and then returned to the scene again to record with 3D methods.

Describe the screen like a game console

Zheng Xu explained how to use point cloud technology and 360-degree video to create virtual images.

Regarding point cloud technology, Zheng uses a 3D laser scanner to scan the scene environment. The scanner converts the object into a little bit, and records the coordinates and color of each point.

The virtual image shows the live environment in a 1:1 ratio, and will show the distance and height.

Zheng described the virtual image of the point cloud technology as very close to the real scene, but because the system is calculated by a computer, the screen "will look like a few game consoles."

The situation in the parking lot and CCTV captured Zhou Zile's final whereabouts.

Point cloud technology and 360-degree video are not complementary

As for 360-degree video recording, Zheng used a 3D video recorder to record the scene environment, which Zheng said would be more realistic than point cloud images.

However, the 360-degree video recording method is restricted by the shooting angle, and it cannot allow the user to move the body and freely change the view of the screen like a point cloud imaging system.

In other words, the point cloud is more interactive, and the 360-degree image will be more realistic. Zheng believes that the two can complement each other.

Show virtual reality in the courtroom

In the past 20 days, inquiries have been conducted in the 18th Court of the West Kowloon Court, and extended courts have been set up in other courts on the same floor to broadcast the inquiries.

The virtual reality system that the court plans to introduce for the first time is set up in the conference room on the 11th floor.

As there is no live broadcast for the daily inquiry, only 30 media seats and 27 public seats can be provided.

Magistrate court jury and their families make

use

A screen measuring about 2 meters by 4 meters was placed in the middle of the conference room. The magistrate, jurors and representatives of all parties sat on both sides of the screen.

People who use virtual reality systems need to wear 3D glasses; for point cloud images, users need to add a "bamboo dragonfly" baton to the 3D glasses so that the system follows the user's movement and rotates the view of the screen .

Zheng reminded that sometimes the screen rotates too fast, and the user may feel dizzy. At that time, remove the stereo glasses and take a rest.

He also pointed out that pregnant women, patients with heart disease and high blood pressure, people who are prone to seasickness, and those who have just finished surgery are not suitable for using virtual reality systems.

The incident occurred in the early morning and the scene also showed dark night

With the assistance of Zheng, the jurors and Zi Le's parents took turns wearing the stereo glasses to use the system.

Zheng added that the virtual reality system mainly presents the low-level environment on the third and second floors of the parking lot. He did not scan the entire parking lot; and the screen showed a dark night scene because the incident occurred in the early morning, and he also went to the scene to scan and film at night.

After leaving the court, the media was allowed to experience the use of the virtual reality system. Some reporters said they felt dizzy.

Zheng Ting said that on April 3 this year, he inspected the parking lot and the surrounding area for the first time for the production of point cloud images. At the location where the accident occurred, many citizens put down mourning items, which had some impact on the recording environment.

Later, the police notified him that Link had cleared the items, and he went to the scene on September 29 to do a second point cloud scan and make a 360-degree video.

He noticed that the sidewalks, walls and stone walls of Link's accident site were painted with white oil, but the height of the low walls and iron fences remained unchanged.

Case Number: CCDI-932/2019(DK)

Each witness told the story of the incident.
