At least 15 boys and children were killed yesterday (Friday) in a bomb blast in eastern Afghanistan, in Taliban-controlled territory, a provincial source said, as violence across the battle-torn country continued to spread.

A spokesman for Razani County Governor said the blast happened after a man driving a rickshaw entered a village in the Gillan area to sell goods, and was then quickly surrounded by children, near a religious gathering.

Another 20 people were injured, including children.

The spokesman said the death toll could rise.

No organization has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the district spokesman said an investigation had been opened into why the children were attacked.

However, Taliban spokesman Zbihullah Mujahid sent a statement to the media saying the blast was caused by unexploded ordnance and was brought by the children to the market area.

He cited a lower number of deaths, saying 12 children were killed.

The conflicting reports cannot be verified because the region is under Taliban control and there is no access for journalists.

Violence in Afghanistan has escalated in recent months despite negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government in Qatar, designed to end a war that has been going on for decades.

Earlier this week, United States Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Millie met with Taliban representatives in Doha without prior notice. They discussed the military aspects of an agreement signed in February between the United States and the Taliban.

The agreement, signed in Qatar, where the Taliban has a political bureau, was to pave the way for direct peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government.

He also regulated the withdrawal of foreign forces from the country.

Outgoing US President Donald Trump has ordered a reduction of forces in Afghanistan from 4,500 to 2,500 by January 15, just days before President-elect Joe Biden enters the White House.

After talks with the Taliban, the chairman of the United States' Joint Chiefs of Staff went on to Kabul, where he met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.
