The new crown pneumonia epidemic in Hong Kong continues and critically ill patients are becoming younger, putting pressure on intensive care beds and manpower.

In order to relieve the pressure of the intensive care department, Tuen Mun Hospital opened two extended resuscitation beds in the recovery room for patients to rest for a short time after the operation, allowing the scheduled surgery patients to stay in the doctor for one night to receive care. The epidemic has been activated for three times and has received about 40 Patients.

Zheng Zhenbang, head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Operating Room Services Department of Tuen Mun Hospital (front row, left) said that this is a pilot project to help relieve the pressure on intensive care beds.

Tuen Mun Hospital currently has 30 intensive care beds, 12 of which have a negative air pressure setting. During the epidemic, the pressure has increased due to the special admission of patients with new coronary pneumonia.

Therefore, Tuen Mun Hospital started to use the resuscitation room in the operating room in early February this year to receive patients who require strict monitoring of their breathing or whose surgery has caused a large amount of fluid loss to stay in the extended resuscitation bed.

The resuscitation room has a high-frequency air exchange to prevent cross-infection. The nursing standard is equivalent to an intensive care bed. It can accept up to 2 patients per night and be taken care of by 1 or 2 nurses. When the condition is stable, they will be transferred to the ward to stay in the doctor. patient.

Lin Jiawen, a consultant doctor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Operating Room Services Department, said that the extension of the resuscitation bed is based on foreign practices. Preparations for this year’s Lunar New Year began and it was opened for the third time last Monday (14th). Even though the number of scheduled operations has been reduced by 20%, she pointed out Cancer operations are still ongoing, and the opening of this type of hospital bed is "one for one."

Department head Zheng Zhenbang added that Tuen Mun Hospital is the first hospital in Hong Kong to open extended resuscitation beds. During the epidemic, there are about 4 to 5 patients who need intensive care after surgery. Now it can accept 2 people.

He revealed that the Kowloon Central Network is also exploring the development of extended resuscitation beds.

Operating room nurses understand the patient's physical and mental needs better

Nursing work is handed over to operating room nurses. At present, more than 30 nurses have received training and need to strengthen patient clinical nursing skills.

Nurse He Aijun shared that the time spent in contact with postoperative patients has increased from several hours to one day. Once a middle-aged female patient received liver surgery, she was worried about her recovery and family members. Her emotions fluctuated greatly, and her thoughts were difficult to tell her family. After talking, it relieves negative emotions a bit, so as to better understand the patient's physical and mental needs.

Senior nurse Ye Pei-ling also said that in the past, there was little opportunity to understand the patient's postoperative situation. Now there is an opportunity to strengthen clinical skills, such as reviewing the treatment of medicine procedures and wound drainage treatment, which can help improve future surgical services.
