The 23rd Knesset of Israel was automatically dissolved tonight (Tuesday) - less than ten months since it was sworn in, after the state budget was not approved until the deadline set by law, and after the failure of attempts to postpone this date. As a result, the 24th Knesset election campaign kicks off and Israeli citizens Went to the polls on March 23, 2021, four days before Passover.

This will be the fourth round of elections held in Israel in less than two years.



Yesterday, the coalition's attempt to enact a law to postpone the deadline for transferring the budget failed, and contacts between the Likud and Blue and White also failed to reach an understanding for the continued existence of the government.

As a result, the Knesset dissipates automatically.



Tonight, in the second and third readings, just before the dissolution of the Knesset, the Knesset plenum approved the temporary directive for the conduct of the elections to the 24th Knesset during Corona.

According to the bill, some of the polling stations will be defined as designated for voters required for the duty of isolation, and separate polling stations for patients.

The bill to postpone the date of the dissolution of the Knesset was rejected on first reading, after no agreements were reached between the Likud and Blue and White, and the Likud's attempts to recruit a majority failed.

A majority of 49 MKs voted against the proposal, and 47 supported it.

Among the opponents was also MK Michal Shir (Likud) who announced the joining of Gideon Saar's new party. MK Sharan Hashakel from the Likud was absent.



Most Blue and White MKs were absent, but three of them, Assaf Zamir, Miki Haimovich and Ram Shefa, voted against the bill.

MKs Zvi Hauser and Yoaz Handel (Derech Eretz), who announced their joining the Saar party, also voted against. On the other hand, MK Yifat Shasha-Bitton, Saar's partner, was absent from the vote.

Knesset members from the United Arab List party were absent from the vote.
