Municipal providers: One increases the electricity price by over 10 percent, the other not at all

Both are regional suppliers in municipal hands.

Nevertheless, the development of electricity prices at “17er Oberlandenergie” and the Bad Tölz municipal utility looks completely different.

Bad Tölz

- It's astonishing: There are two electricity suppliers in Bad Tölz that are supported by municipal shareholders.

Stadtwerke (100 percent owner: City of Tölz) and "17er Oberlandenergie", in which 27 municipalities as well as Stadtwerke are minority shareholders with 7.89 percent.

The difference: some, the municipal utilities, keep their electricity price constant for the coming year.

The "17s", on the other hand, increase by an impressive 10.6 percent.

Why is that?

Julia Mohaupt from Marketing at Tölzer Stadtwerke speaks of a “social mission” that, as a municipal company, is taken very seriously in times of Corona.

In addition, in contrast to "17er Oberlandenergie" in the Bad Tölz network area, it is the basic supplier.

He supplies most household customers and as a supplier has a lower risk.

As a co-partner in the “17er”, the Stadtwerke have “no influence” on pricing, according to Mohaupt.

Regional Ökostrim from the Obernach hydroelectric power station

The "17er Oberlandenergie" justifies the steep price jump of 10.6 percent for Tölz customers in the coming year, among other things, with the fact that the so-called network fee in the Tölzer city area is 2.2 cents per kilowatt hour higher than, for example, in the network area of Bayernwerk AG, explains managing director Thomas Feistl.

As the owner of the electricity network, the municipal utilities may charge a fee for its use.

In the past, according to Feistl, the difference in network charges was always balanced out.

Due to the changed customer behavior and much more frequent changes, this practice can no longer be maintained.

It is clear that the price jump is steep and has thought for a long time, "but we had to do it at some point".

Feistl also points out that regional green electricity is being offered from the Obernach hydropower plant and that with a working price of 30.89 cents / kWh in price comparisons with other providers, you “don't have to hide”.

In times of Corona, shouldn't one have done without such a significant increase?

You not only have an obligation to households and traders, but also to employees and suppliers, replies the managing director.

"We are encouraged to work economically." During the Corona period, the government did not wait for the state moratorium on payments, but rather approached business customers (innkeepers, retailers) that were particularly affected beforehand in order to discuss deferrals with them, for example.

"We found good solutions with many." In addition, the VAT reduction was passed on to customers for the whole of 2020, not just since July 1st.

Prices 2021 in comparison:

  • Stadtwerke Tölz: working price: 28.10 ct / kWh, monthly basic price for conventional meters: 12.50 euros, modern meters: 13.33 euros.

  • 17 Oberlandenergie: 30.89 ct / kWh, conventional meter: 11.90 euros, modern meter: 12.58 euros.
