The chairman of the right, MK Naftali Bennett, announced tonight (Wednesday) his candidacy for prime minister in the upcoming elections.
A day after the dissolution of the 23rd Knesset, Bennett said in the Knesset that "Netanyahu is full of rights, but in the moment of truth, when we needed him most of all, he simply was not there. We must thank him for years of action, but we must move forward."
In recent months, support for the right-wing party has soared in polls to the 20-seat range, but has weakened since former Likud official Gideon Saar announced the formation of a new movement, and according to polls published yesterday it has won 15-13 seats, making it the third or fourth largest party.
Bennett has not yet officially announced that he is aiming for the senior position, and right-wingers believe that after the announcement - the party will rise again in the polls.
