The VAR, a controversial tool in South America 6:09
(CNN Spanish) -
The Colombian Football Federation (FCF) confirmed this Wednesday that the South American under-20 team is suspended due to the threat of covid-19.
The tournament was to be played from February 2021.
The FCF explained that the tournament "is canceled by provision of the International Federation of Associated Football (FIFA) and CONMEBOL because of the setbacks that the world has experienced due to covid-19."
The U-20 championship was supposed to define South America's qualifiers for the Indonesia 2021 World Cup. It is not yet clear how the World Cup can be impacted by these calendar changes.
The FCF communicated: "For now, the most important thing is to heed the recommendations provided by national governments to contain the spread of the virus."
The tournament was to be held at the Colombian venues in Armenia, Manizales, Pereira and Ibagué.
