Minister Zeev Elkin of the Likud party announced tonight (Wednesday) that he is resigning from the government and joining Gideon Saar's new party, Tikva Hadasha.
Elkin's move is surprising, as he is considered close to Netanyahu, and was involved in many of the prime minister's political kings in the Likud and the coalition.
Elkin, who wears a kippah and lives in Jerusalem, is also known to have right-wing views regarding the Likud.
His affiliation with Saar's party places it even deeper on the right, and it may make it difficult for center-left voters to support it.
The Likud party said: "Water Minister Elkin skipped ahead of the Likud and Likud to Gideon only because he failed to enter the top ten in the Likud and did not get the job he wanted. Elkin also knows that Gideon has no government without Lapid and the left. "
