"The worst year in history."
We are stunned in front of such hyperbole.
The worst, really?
Worse than 1916, the year of Verdun?
Worse than 1918, the year of the Spanish flu?
Worse than 1942, the year of Stalingrad?
Worse than 1871, "the terrible year", when the Parisians, besieged by the Prussian army, ate rats?
Worse than 1709, the year of the "great winter", when famine killed en masse in the France of Louis XIV?
And yet we only speak of Europe, and especially of France.
We were told that the educational level had fallen in the United States as much as in France and we did not believe it.
We were told that the American press, which French journalists admire so much, was now in the hands of young people in their thirties who call themselves
"woke"
(awake), sensitive to ecology,
