A court in Pakistan today (Thursday) ordered the immediate release of four defendants in the abduction and murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002, including the main defendant who was previously sentenced to death after being convicted of plotting to execute him.

In April, the same court - the Supreme Court in Sindh District - commuted the death sentence of the main suspect, Ahmed Omar Said Sheikh, who was born in the UK, and acquitted the other three due to lack of evidence against them.

Despite the decision, the Pakistani authorities have held the four in custody for the past eight months, due to the needs of "law and order".

The government and Pearl's parents have appealed the April acquittals in the Supreme Court, which is still hearing their petitions.

Sind County District Attorney Salman Tablibudin told Reuters the court's decision was "very disappointing."

He added that the district government has not yet decided whether to appeal the decision.

The American Jewish journalist, who was 38 at the time of his assassination, investigated the activities of terrorist organizations in Karachi after the September 11 attacks, and he was abducted in January 2002. A few weeks later, a video was published documenting the beheading.

Sheikh, who was born in the UK and studied at the London School of Economics, was arrested in India in the 1990s for his involvement in the kidnapping of Western tourists.

He was one of three prisoners released from prison in India after gunmen hijacked an Indian plane in 1999 and landed with it in Afghanistan.

The Taliban, which then ruled the country, assisted in negotiations between the parties.

In 2011, a group of American journalists, including Pearl's colleagues, said they believed Sheikh was not the one who beheaded him.

The Pearl Venture claimed it was Khaled Sheikh Muhammad, who is accused of planning the 9/11 attacks and is being held at a Guantanamo Bay detention facility.
