Ulrich Dremel from Walpertskirchen has a special hobby.

He makes schnapps at home and runs a small distillery.

Walpertskirchen -

Ulrich Dremel (80) from Walpertskirchen has turned his previous job into a demanding hobby.

Almost 40 years ago, the experienced master distiller acquired a fruit distilling right from Schliersee.

Since then he has run a small distillery in the basement of his own home.

If Corona allows it, he and his son Jürgen want to finish roasted fruit that has been in storage for two years over the Christmas holidays.

Demineralized water is added to the high-percentage distillate to turn it into a 40-percent fruit schnapps.

Then the noble home-distilled wine should be marketed.

Dremel has its regular customers who are looking forward to the all-natural schnapps.

“I like grape brandy very much,” he says of his preference.

Apple schnapps and Williams pear are also preferred specialties.

Dremel takes great care when enjoying its own schnapps.

His motto is moderation.

Because: "Alcohol is a dangerous thing."

Distilling schnapps itself was his dream job and has now become a hobby that professionals are happy to devote to.

Ulrich Dremel was born in Westphalia because the family from Bavaria came there through the chaos of war.

In 1945 it went back to Bavaria.

Here he was first considered a “price”, says the senior with a smile.

As a young man he learned the art of distilling as a trainee for the city of Munich, spent his apprenticeship on a large estate in Riem and as a journeyman in Weihenstephan.

He gained further professional experience in Westphalia.

Dremel had his first job as a distiller at Südzucker in Würzburg.

Later he worked for 38 years as a master distiller in Feldkirchen at one of the largest distilleries in Bavaria until he retired.

Dremel played a key role in building up the business and increasing profits.

“I lived for that.

I got into my job.

I was able to realize myself. ”This passion became a hobby that still accompanies the sprightly pensioner.

Dremel emphasizes that anyone who privately has permission to distill schnapps has to scrupulously comply with the legal requirements and also pay taxes on the schnapps.

"It's about reliability."

The senior has already given his son, who is a food technologist, the right to distill, which is tied to the property.

The house distillery itself was installed by a specialist company.

And there is a crucial rule: schnapps has to be distilled once every ten years so that the right to distill does not expire.

When Ulrich Dremel finishes the fruit brandy with his son at Christmas, a great wish will come true for him.

There is one thing that particularly pleases him: "It's nice that the son is now o'pack."
