Stella Tennant became famous in the modeling world avoiding the traditionally feminine aesthetic that made her contemporaries stars.

With his blunt pixie cut and piercing gaze, he was a '90s fashion icon.

Tennant, who maintained her sharpness throughout her long career in fashion, died this week at age 50, Vogue reported.

Tennant's family, including her husband, David Lasnet, and their four children, confirmed the news in a statement sent to the outlet.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Stella Tennant on December 22, 2020," the statement said.

“Stella was a wonderful woman and an inspiration to all of us.

We will miss her very much, "he adds.

Tennant was a talented model with a more punk look than British supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.

She often wore her hair short and spiky, and you rarely saw her crack a smile on the pages of Vogue.

For all the sharpness she brought to editorial fashion, the designers adored her.

She was a muse for fashion luminaries like Helmut Lang, whose shows were among her favorites, and the late Karl Lagerfeld when he directed Chanel.

She continued to appear on the catwalks until earlier this year, when she walked for Valentino at Paris Fashion Week.

The daughter of UK aristocrats and raised on a Scottish sheep farm, Tennant began modeling "accidentally," she told British Vogue in 2018. While many models from her time were discovered as teenagers, Tennant still sent photos casting agents at age 20.

She had graduated from art school and planned to pursue sculpture if modeling didn't take off.

A 1993 article in British Vogue called "London Girls" turned out to be her big break.

Stella Tennant, her eyes surrounded by thick black eyeliner, wore an Alexander McQueen dress and a subversive septum piercing.

Surrounded by seasoned models, the 22-year-old was asked on set to appear in a Versace ad.

Shortly thereafter, she was appearing in up to 75 shows per season, she said in a 2018 interview. She grew tired of the hectic pace of fashion when she and her then-husband decided to have children.

"I've given everything, all my energy and time, and now we're going to go and have a family together," she told the Fashion publication Document Journal in 2018. "And I thought it was me who was saying goodbye."

Terry Jones, one of the stars of the British comedy group Monty Python, died on January 18, 2020 at the age of 77.

In recent years, he spoke of his health problems, including dementia.

When fashion magazines began to prefer a traditional glamorous look for models in the 2000s, Tennant said she felt her focus was shrinking.

"The agency really didn't know what to do with me," he recalled.

“I thought, 'Well, that's not a surprise.

I had my little moment, and fashion moved on, and I'll keep going too. '

Tennant continued to model, although less frequently than in his early 20s.

On occasion, some of her four children appeared in photoshoots with her, including in 2019, when she and her daughter Iris starred in an ad encouraging UK residents to buy second-hand items.

(Tennant spent much of his time promoting sustainable causes.)

Perhaps her most memorable moment of the past decade came in 2012, when she and her fellow British supermodels strutted out at the closing ceremony of the London Summer Olympics.

Along with Moss, Campbell and more, Tennant donned a Christopher Kane suit, the only woman not wearing a dress.

Her hair was dyed black and cut in a mullet style.

Its edge had grown sharper.

The fashion world mourns the death of Stella Tennant

Tennant's colleagues and frequent collaborators mourned his death online.

Naomi Campbell, in an Instagram post, said that Tennant was "an outstanding person in every way."

"When we met, we always picked up where we left off," he wrote.

On Twitter, Versace said that Stella Tennant had been the muse of the late Gianni house founder for many years and a "friend of the family."

Nina Garcia, Elle's editor-in-chief and "Project Runway" judge, said Stella Tennant "mixed fragility and innate elegance with an androgynous look" that inspired dozens of designers.

With Tennant's death, fashion has lost one of its favorite mavericks.
