Among these fake accounts, a dozen used the faces of people who never existed as their profile photos: fake faces, generated by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms.

Unlike a “deepfake”, which consists of embedding the face of one person on that of another in a photo or video, a “fake face” is a face that does not exist.
