After the Australian government announced in early July that it would provide Hong Kong people with a permanent residency program, the authorities have not mentioned how to obtain permanent residency after the visa expires.

Australian media reported on December 24 that the Ministry of the Interior revealed for the first time more conditions for applying to become permanent residents.

Australia announced on July 9 that the "Preferential Treatment of Hong Kong People" program includes allowing Hong Kong people holding local student visas or temporary skilled visas (Temporary skilled visa) to be allowed to stay in Australia for an additional 5 years, and then there will be ways to apply for permanent residency.

The local radio station SBS Cantonese (SBS Cantonese) has repeatedly asked the Ministry of the Interior on relevant issues. The other party stated that the first new permanent residence visa would not be issued within 5 years, and did not clearly disclose the specific content, only emphasizing the applicant Must meet "health, character and security requirements", but it has not been confirmed whether these are equal to all the conditions.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior told SBS on December 24 that the relevant visas are still being formulated, but eligible Hong Kong passport holders will not be required to meet the additional conditions normally required for other technical visas.

The authorities will announce more details in early 2021.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC News) has reported that there are currently about 10,500 Hong Kong students and 1,500 Hong Kong people holding relevant visas in Australia.

The Ministry of the Interior pointed out that those who apply for extension and subsequent permanent residence visas must hold a Hong Kong SAR passport, while those who only hold a British National (Overseas) passport are not included in the relevant plan.
