The Central Bank of Iran has said it has received approval from the United States to transfer funds for vaccines against the corona virus in violation of the sanctions imposed on it.

The United States has not yet responded.

The governor of the central bank, Abd al-Nasser Mati, said yesterday that an Iranian bank had received approval from the US Treasury Department to transfer the money to a Swiss bank to pay for the vaccines.

"They (the Americans) have imposed sanctions on all our banks. They have agreed to this isolated case under the pressure of global public opinion," Hemati told state television.

Hemati said Iran would pay about $ 244 million for 16.8 million doses of corona vaccines from COVAX, a group of several international agencies dedicated to ensuring fair access to vaccines for poor countries.

Iranian officials have argued that US sanctions prevent them from transferring funds to COVAX.

At the same time, the Iranian pharmaceutical company "Shifa" began registering volunteers for human trials this week with the first local vaccine against corona, in the shadow of an internal dispute over the use of foreign vaccines.

"We do not recommend injecting foreign vaccines against Corona to the Revolutionary Guards and Basij," said Muhammad Raza Nakdi, deputy commander of the Revolutionary Guards, quoted by Iranian media.

In recent days, there has been a decline in the number of deaths from corona in Iran, which has more than 54,300 victims - more than any other country in the Middle East and among the highest figures in the world.

The slowdown in mortality rates comes after more than a month of night curfews and other restrictions in major cities.

However, authorities warn that the danger of a new outbreak is still high.

Outgoing US President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2018 nuclear deal and imposed new sanctions on Iran, while President-elect Joe Biden may rejoin the agreement signed when he was Barack Obama's deputy in 2015.
