The year in retro, the 10 favorite hotels of Le Figaro in 2020

2020-12-25T07:19:46.099Z

From Thailand to Brazil via Madeira and Paris, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, 2020 still gave us the opportunity to test magnificent establishments around the world. Back to our ten favorites.

Georges' farm, Atins, Brazil

Atins is a lost fishing village to the west of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (the sheets of Maranhão, in Portuguese), perfect for nature lovers and kitesurfing enthusiasts.

Once there, the scenery is total.

Sandy streets, long sandy beach, a few houses, Atins has, for the moment, remained faithful to its origins.

And a little away from the village, this

pousada

is a real Eden with its 12 chalets.

Some of them can accommodate up to 5 people.

The one in height has a breathtaking view of the oceanfront.

No air conditioning in this end of the world, but natural ventilation and mosquito nets around the beds to sleep peacefully.

We tested at the start of the year.

Mansion Villeroy, Paris, France

A small masterpiece from the beginning of the 20th century, the mansion at 33, rue Jean-Goujon is a fine example of historicist architecture in Paris.

Another style, another atmosphere.

Also in January, the latest 5-star Parisian made a grand entrance into our list and welcomed its first customers.

The luxury villa real estate group, The Collection, inaugurated its first hotel and for the decor, it did not call on the usual designers of the Place de Paris.

However, the whole is very successful.

Exceptional location, on the edge of the Golden Triangle of Parisian luxury, fine dining, respecting its original decor and rooms (there are 11 of them) with very neat aesthetics… Of course, we slept there!

Hoxton Hotel, Amsterdam, Netherlands

A central address a stone's throw from the Jordaan, which allows you to discover most of Amsterdam's main areas on foot, by tram or with a few pedal strokes.

In February,

Le Figaro

set down in Amsterdam to test this open hotel in an incredible historic building (five traditional houses united into one) which was the residence of the city's mayor in the 17th century.

Located by the canal on Herengracht, it is in the heart of the “9 straatjes”, nine streets dotted with trendy little shops and cozy cafes.

Faithful to its cool and trendy spirit, the Dutch address of the British group is the ideal stopover for a weekend with family or lovers.

Its strong point?

Hotels are expensive in Amsterdam and the Hoxton's prices are particularly good for staying in this popular area.

Le Chabichou, Courchevel, France

The decoration has avoided the clichés of the mountain.

Say goodbye to deer heads, black and white photos of snowfields and cow skins: here, it's the opposite.

In the middle of the winter season, we took the road to the summits to rediscover the famous Courchevel hotel.

Today, in the two elegant white chalets on the edge of the Les Chenus slope, it is difficult to find traces of the first establishment.

Change of owner, look, chef and category, the Chabichou has entered the closed 5-star club of the most famous resort in the Alps.

A renovation from top to bottom by a young interior designer from Rhône-Alpes, Émilie Rollet.

Sober and chic, a rather rare combination here where luxury likes to show itself.

The hotel now ticks all the boxes for excellence.

The Imperial Hotel, New Delhi, India

It is one of the oldest and most beautiful palaces in the capital of India.

The years give the Imperial Hotel a unique charm.

The Imperial / Photo press

Direction New Delhi to discover one of the first palaces opened in the Indian capital.

With its Art Deco facade it distills an art of living that touches perfection.

Gandhi and Nehru were regulars.

We understand why.

The building is hidden behind pleasant gardens which exude calm and freshness.

The Janpath metro station, located directly opposite, provides quick access to the Old Town or the Gateway of India.

The best 5-star in Delhi provides impeccable service, whatever the hour: newspaper delivered at dawn, pillow menu and warm friendliness make this palace a place where you almost feel at home ... reasonable price.

Belmond Reid's Palace, Funchal, Madeira

From Habsburgs to Churchill, passing by a multitude of stars of cinema, literature and sport, Belmond Reid's Palace has always shone as much for its clientele as for its offer: 111 rooms and 48 suites facing the ocean.

Return to Europe where the most chic establishment in Madeira will celebrate its 130th anniversary in 2021 and he is quite proud of it.

Superbly redecorated two years ago, the most beautiful hotel on the Portuguese “island of flowers” has attracted the greats of this world for over a century.

It enjoys a prime location, on the side of a cliff, and a Michelin-starred restaurant.

A big highlight (in addition to the rest), the rooms all have a balcony overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

And the staff (sometimes French-speaking) is like the place: smiling, chic and unfussy.

The Anantara Siam Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand

As soon as you enter the Anantara Siam, you take in the measure of the immense lobby flooded with bouquets and colonnades.

Vertiginous, inaccessible, the ceilings covered with traditional Buddhist motifs are inspired by a temple eaves.

Anantara / Photo press

There are two types of large hotels in Bangkok: those which huddle up near the Chao Phraya River to offer their guests the even and soothing escape of the waves or those who prefer to play the card of proximity to the heart of the Thai capital.

Among these, the Anantara Siam has established itself as a true oasis of calm and well-being perfectly sealed from the effervescence of a megalopolis that never falls asleep.

Above the grand staircase, worthy of a palace, the huge Ramayana-inspired fresco is arguably the most photographed painting in Bangkok.

Our full opinion to discover below.

Aman Venice Hotel, Venice, Italy

If the palace is perfectly identifiable from the canal, and moreover we are invited to go there by boat, it is however much more discreet from the mainland.

Aman / Photo press

The Aman hotel group carefully chooses its locations before setting up in a destination.

This is undoubtedly the case in Venice with the choice of Palazzo Papadopoli as an anchor point in the Serenissima.

Located along the Grand Canal, this 16th century palace has been completely revisited by interior designer Jean-Michel Gathy.

This luxury establishment brings the Venetian splendor to life for only about fifty guests, undoubtedly satisfied by the unparalleled hotel arrangement.

Obviously, excellence has a cost which sometimes escapes the notion of value for money.

The Joali Hotel, Muravandhoo, Maldives

White sand, translucent waters and birdsong ... The island of Muravandhoo, lost in the middle of Raa atoll, in the north of the Maldives, ticks all the boxes of blue paradise.

Joali / Photo press

Finally, for those who are ready to break the bank, we also tested this 5-star in the Maldives surrounded by a translucent lagoon in Raa atoll a few days before the border closure.

The hotel was built following the outline of the thousand trees that thrived there and which today give the island its lush appearance, quite rare in Maldivian resorts.

A marine biologist works for the hotel year-round, working to regenerate the atoll's corals, devastated by El-Nino in 2016. But Joali also wanted to be an “art resort”.

Sculptures, design objects, paintings punctuate every corner of the hotel and also its villas, giving it that little extra soul that distinguishes it from many other establishments that have come to anchor in this little piece of ocean.

The price is that of the exception, in the light of this earthly paradise.
